Ronaldo scored three goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Cristiano Ronaldo has already confirmed that the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 is his last appearance in the quadrennial tournament, with Portugal exiting in the Round of 16 stage after a 1-0 loss to Spain. Meanwhile, rumours are rife that the 41-year-old will call time on his international career altogether after another fruitless campaign with the Selecao das Quinas.

However, Portugal’s new head coach, Jorge Jesus, has provided a positive update regarding Ronaldo’s international future. Jesus replaced the outgoing Roberto Martinez, signing a four-year contract with an eye on the 2030 World Cup.

Speaking to the media at a press conference on Monday, the 74-year-old confirmed that Ronaldo remains a part of his selection plans, provided the veteran forward continues to deliver results.

“As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team,” Jesus said.

Earlier, the head coach had termed Ronaldo “a symbol of Portuguese football”. The pair worked together at Al-Nassr, helping the club win the Saudi Pro League last season.

However, Ronaldo has come under fire for some of his performances with the national team, especially in the opening match against DR Congo. He was criticised for a toothless performance by many pundits, including Thierry Henry.

However, Jesus said that working with a talent like Ronaldo will not pose any challenges.

“I haven’t spoken with (Ronaldo) yet. (He) is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me,” Jesus said. “I had great pleasure working with him this past year. (It’s) easy to work with him.”

Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 146 goals in 233 caps.
