Who is Didier Deschamps? France head coach in FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals

Didier Deschamps leads France in the World Cup semi-finals against Spain.

France have been the standout team in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, cruising through to the semi-final stage. They have won all six of their games in the expanded 48-team edition in North America.

While Les Bleus have been powered by the incredible Kylian Mbappe, who leads the goals contribution chart and the Golden Boot race, another key figure has been equally responsible for their success: head coach Didier Deschamps.

The 57-year-old took the helm of Les Bleus in 2012. Since then, he has delivered incredible success, lifting the World Cup in 2018 and leading them to the final once again in 2022. In total, Deschamps has secured 18 victories in the tournament, which is a World Cup record.

Deschamps remains one of the few people to lift the World Cup title both as a player (1998) and a head coach (2018). The only two other people to achieve this feat are Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

Didier Deschamps enjoyed an incredible playing career, making more than 100 appearances for Marseille and Juventus. As a defensive midfielder, he also represented Les Bleus 103 times as a player.

Since transitioning to coaching, he started his career at the helm of Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2001. He won the Coupe de la Ligue title in 2003. He also led the principality side to their first UEFA Champions League final the following year.

He joined Juventus in 2006, replacing the relegated Bianconeri following the Calciopoli scandal. He led the Italian team to the top flight, but resigned following a reported tussle with the club’s management.

He returned to his home country to join Marseille. He led the team to three consecutive Coupe de la Ligue trophies. He won the French Super Cup twice as well as the Ligue 1 title.

However, he departed after poor domestic results in 2012, joining the French national team. He replaced Laurent Blanc, signing a two-year contract. His first trophy came in 2018, leading Les Bleus to the World Cup title in Russia.

He then clinched the UEFA Nations League title in 2021 before leading the team to the World Cup final the following year. In total, he has led Les Bleus to the World Cup quarter-finals on four consecutive occasions – a feat achieved by just three other teams.

With Deschamps confirmed to leave the national team at the end of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Mbappe and Co. will look to add another title to their beloved head coach’s trophy cabinet.
