Discover the English Premier League
The Premier League is the top football competition in the UK. Also known as the English Premier League, it is not just popular in this country but is one of the most-watched football leagues in the world. As the top-tier league in the country, there’s a lot to play for, with the winning team crowned champions of England.
What is the Premier League?
Despite being so popular, the Premier League has not actually been around for that long. In fact, the league only began in 1992. This was behind the decision by the first division to separate from the remaining leagues in the then-Football Leagues. In doing so, they set up this separate top-tier football competition.
Each year, this league takes place over nine months. There are twenty different teams that are part of the league. The teams all play each other twice so that they both get a home advantage during the season.
How does the Premier League work?
The scoring system is a points-based one. This means the team that manages to get the most points over the 38 games will be the winner. Similarly, the position in the rest of the league is also determined by the different points each team has earned. However, if teams have the same number of points, then the goal difference is the determining factor in their position in the league. Consequently, the more goals a team can score in each game throughout the season, the better they will be down the line. The top four teams in the English Premier League are then entered into the Champions League.
Importantly, there is a strict relegation system where three teams drop out of the Premier League at the end of a season into the Championship. Three teams gets promoted from the Championship into the Premier League as well. As such, there’s a lot to play for with teams aiming to avoid the bottom place.
Top Premier League teams
As relegation and promotion occurs each season, the twenty teams within the Premier League change each season. That being said, it’s always good to know exactly which teams are playing as this is important when knowing who to cheer on.
For the 2024/2025 season, many of the top teams are very much still in the ascendency. Teams like Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Man Utd, Tottenham Hotspurs, West Ham and Wolves are all still in it to win. The rest of the line-up for this year includes Southampton, Nottingham, Newcastle, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth.
At the start of this season, Sheffield United, Luton Town and Burnley were the three unlucky losers. All three were relegated, dropping into the Championship, though they could get promoted again at the end of the year.
Watching the Premier League live
In the UK, the Premier League is one of the most watched sporting events. This means that there are plenty of different ways to watch it. You can watch all of the games live on TV. Helpfully, these are split across three broadcasters, including SKY, Prime and TNT Sports. All the action is covered so you can switch on and watch any of the games. Additionally, there is the option for catchup, which means you don’t need to worry about missing a game or two here and there.
Of course, there’s nothing quite like going to see a football game in the flesh. With hundreds of games throughout the season, there are plenty of matches to choose from. Even if you’re following a specific team, each team has 38 matches to play. This means that you can select a game that’s more convenient for you in a city where you don’t have to travel far.
If you’re looking to get in on the exciting action, then you first need to purchase tickets. It’s always best to do this via a trusted ticketing platform such as Go Sport Travel. Additionally, you should book accommodation (if needed) in advance to avoid any disappointments closer to kick-off.
Choosing football fixtures
Not only will you have to choose the fixtures you want to watch and potentially even go to (some of them overlap), but you should understand how they are chosen and set up in the first place. Once the teams in each division are confirmed, then the fixtures are compiled. This is all done at the end of the previous season. Each side is then put in a grid to pair them, determining the dates and which team will play at home and when. It’s all done at random, with the computer deciding which sides play. The season is split in half, though, ensuring the same fixture can’t be played within two weeks.
