All ISL teams will feature in the tournament this year.

Asia’s oldest football tournament is all geared up to unveil its 131st Edition come August. The Durand Cup will be played as the season opener in Indian Football ahead of the 2022-2023 season.

This year the tourney will witness all ISL teams, five I-league teams and four teams from the armed forces go up against each other for the historic prize. All teams have been split into four groups of five teams each.

Moreover, the tournament will follow a multi-city format unlike last year and will be played across three cities - Kolkata, Guwahati and Imphal. The matches of Group A & B will be played in Kolkata while the matches of Group C & D will be played in Imphal and Guwahati respectively.

On that note, here’s all you need to know about the 2022 Durand Cup.

About the tournament

The Durand Cup is the world’s third and Asia’s oldest football tournament. It was started way back in 1888 by Mortimer Durand, the former foreign secretary of British India. Initially it was just open to the armed forces, but was later made open to football clubs as well.

It is jointly organized by the Durand Cup Football Tournament Society and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The winner is awarded with three trophies - The Durand Cup, President’s Cup and the Shimla Trophy.

Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are the most successful teams of the Durand Cup with 16 titles each while FC Goa became the first Indian Super League (ISL) side to win it in 2021. The Gaurs defeated former winners Mohammedan Sporting in extra time in the final to script history.

Format

The tournament is played in two phases - round-robin and knockouts. 20 teams are divided in four groups with five teams each.

After the round robin format in the group stages, the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockouts. Thus, setting up the final between the best two teams of the tournament.

This year the Durand will follow a multi-city format and will be played in three cities. The Salt Lake stadium, Naihati Bankimanjali Stadium and Kishore Bharati Krirangan will host the matches of Group A & B.
