La Tricolor face an unbeaten Mexican side in tonight’s knockout clash.

Ecuador take on Mexico in a Round of 32 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 30. The South American side qualified for the knockouts as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the group stage.

La Tricolor began their campaign in a disappointing manner, losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast courtesy of a late goal from Amad Diallo. They were then held to a goalless draw by Curacao, with the South American side failing to break their opponent’s defence despite having 27 shots.

Sebastian Beccacece’s side sealed qualification in a dramatic manner on the final matchday, shocking four-time winners Germany 2-1. Leroy Sane put Die Mannschaft ahead in the second minute, but goals Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata secured a comeback win for La Tricolor.

Thoughts on the lineup

With no fresh injuries to contend with, Beccacece will stick with a largely unchanged group of players for his starting lineup. 39-year-old goalkeeper Hernan Galindez starts between the sticks.

Willian Pacho is one of the most exciting defenders in Europe, and the Paris Saint-Germain centre-back starts with Club Brugge youngster Joel Ordonez. Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie starts on the left, along with the versatile Alan Franco.

Moises Caicedo is the beating heart of the midfield, and he starts alongside Pedro Vite, who has been his side’s best player in the tournament. John Yeboah starts wide along with Nilson Angulo. The Sunderland winger scored a brilliant goal in the previous match and will be key in tonight’s game for his side.

Gonzalo Plata starts up front, and he is joined by Enner Valencia, who is one goal away from reaching his 50th international goal.
