England sealed a nervy 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo in a Round of 32 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 1. The win took the Three Lions to the next stage, and several players wrote their names in the history books as well.
Harry Kane was the star of the show for his side on Wednesday. After the European side conceded early through Brian Cipenga, he netted the equaliser with 15 minutes to go in regulation time. He then scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.
Other than his goal-scoring exploits, Kane made his 15th appearance in the quadrennial tournament. This made him the joint highest-capped outfield player for England in World Cup history, along with Marcus Rashford, who started on the left wing. Kane and Rashford have both represented their nation in the 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made his 16th appearance on Wednesday. This put him second in the list of English players with the most World Cup appearances. The Everton custodian is just behind Peter Shilton, who made 17 World Cup appearances for the Three Lions.
Defender John Stones, meanwhile, came in as a substitute in the 90th minute to make his 14th appearance in the tournament, putting him joint-fifth on the list.
