The Three Lions topped Group L.

England are also set to face DR Congo in their first knockout game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Three Lions gave promising performances and remained unbeaten in the group stage.

Thomas Tuchel’s men started their FIFA World Cup campaign against the 2018 runner-ups, Croatia. Harry Kane scored the opening goal for England and later completed his brace in the 42nd minute. Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford were the other two goal scorers in the Three Lions’ 4-1 win over Croatia.

However, the 1966 champions were satisfied with their performance, as they conceded only two goals. Against Ghana in the second match, they played out a 0-0 draw, with the Three Lions having 78 per cent possession and taking 19 shots but being unable to beat the Black Stars’ low block.

Nevertheless, they again got positive results against Panama in their final group-stage game at the MetLife Stadium. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored once each to help the Three Lions secure the top spot in Group L, above Croatia.

In the newly introduced round of 32, England are set to lock horns with the DR Congo, who have qualified for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. The sub-Saharan nation also recorded their first-ever victory in the summer tournament over Uzbekistan.

The Three Lions vs the Leopards clash is set to be played at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia on Wednesday, July 1st.

Thoughts on the lineup

England’s injury woes have been a serious issue for the side, especially for the right-back position. Reece James was already injured, while Jarell Quansah also suffered an injury during the side’s latest clash against Panama.

Nevertheless, Eric Konsa, who played as a centre-back, will continue to feature at the same position. Djed Spence will play as a right-back against the DRC. Marc Guéhi will join the Aston Villa defender in the centre-back duo, while Nico O’Reilly will provide support on the left.

Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice will play in the midfield behind Jude Bellingham. Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford will play on the wings. Harry Kane, who has scored three goals in three games, will play as the frontman for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
