England and Argentina set for sixth World Cup meeting.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, after months of intense battle, has narrowed down to four incredible nations, who have all displayed immense resilience and quality throughout the tournament. In a historic semi-final clash, the England national football team will face Argentina at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia, USA.
England entered the competition with high expectations to bring the trophy back to their home soil, having previously won it in 1966. England had an excellent start under captain Harry Kane’s guidance, finishing as group leaders, undefeated.
Harry Kane displayed his big-game prowess in the Round of 32, as England defeated DR Congo 2-1 after being 1-0 down. They then faced tournament co-host Mexico in the Round of 16, securing a dramatic 3-2 win despite being restricted to 10 men.
England then played Norway in the quarter-finals, managing a 2-1 win, guided by Jude Bellingham’s brace, to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since 2018.
Argentina, captained by icon Lionel Messi, will target their second consecutive World Cup title to become only the third nation to achieve the feat. They had a brilliant start to the tournament, topping their group with a perfect record.
They were massively tested in the knockout rounds, defeating tournament debutants Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time. Argentina then scripted one of the biggest comebacks in World Cup history, securing a dramatic 3-2 win, after being 2-0 down until the 78th minute. They then won 3-1 against Swizterland in extra time in the quarter-finals,securing their place in the semi-finals.
England and Argentina share a fierce and highly competitive history at the World Cup, with this marking their sixth meeting in the tournament. Their most iconic encounters will be the quarter-final clash in 1986, with Diego Maradona scoring the legendary “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century”, to lead Argentina to a 2-1 victory.
