Why could England vs Norway FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal clash be delayed?

England and Norway will face each other for the first time in the FIFA World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel’s England secured a memorable triumph over co-hosts Mexico in a dramatic clash at the Mexico City stadium in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and now they are set to face Norway, who slayed five-time champions Brazil 2-1.
The game is set to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, the home of MLS side Inter Miami. However, as per reports, fans might have to wait a little longer to see the game than expected.
Why could England vs. Norway be delayed?
The quarterfinal clash between England and Norway could be delayed due to the heatwave in the northern United States. According to a Daily Mail report, FIFPRO has recommended delaying or postponing matches if the local temperature exceeds 28°C.
Meanwhile, the temperature at the Miami stadium is expected to reach 29-32°C at kickoff, which is not considered ideal for a football game. Since last week, the FIFA World Cup has been hit by a massive heatwave.

In New York, people have been advised to stay indoors, while cooling centres and heat domes have also been established across the state. Nearly two-thirds of the country is experiencing unusually high temperatures, including the major stadiums.
Even nighttime temperatures are expected to be around 27°C (80°F) in cities like Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Galveston, and Charleston. Meanwhile, people in Las Vegas are expected to experience temperatures around 44°C (111°F) on Saturday, the day when two FIFA World Cup games are scheduled.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued warnings for the people, claiming that the heatwaves will be significant and dangerous. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, said:
“This upcoming heat wave does look pretty remarkable. This is going to be a long duration, widespread and high-intensity heat event that’s going to affect millions of people for over a week.”
The heatwave could also threaten people’s health, especially football players who will feature in the World Cup quarterfinal. The Miami Stadium does not have a roof; however, it has a massive canopy that covers about 92% of the seats. Thus, players are likely to be saved from direct sunlight, but not the heatwave.
What other states are affected by the heatwave?
Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Galveston, and Charleston.
