Enzo Maresca names four Manchester City captains for 2026-27 season

Ruben Dias will be the main captain of Manchester City.

Enzo Maresca has stated that Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma will be part of Manchester City’s four-person leadership team this season. Guehi, who arrived in January, and Donnarumma, the custodian, will both take on additional responsibilities.

Ruben Dias will take over as the club’s main skipper this year, succeeding Bernardo Silva, who left on a free transfer in the summer.

Erling Haaland remains a member of the group. This is despite Maresca teasing that the No.9 could not be the primary captain since the manager prefers his captains to pass on commands to the rest of the squad after they score instead of rejoicing. The Norwegian scored far too many goals for that.

Rodri’s departure another captaincy opening on the team. Maresca decided to appoint the skippers rather than a dressing-room vote. He also wanted an English player on his side.

Phil Foden had put his name up front, but Maresca went with former Crystal Palace captain Guehi, who has already established himself as a first-team regular. The 26-year-old also moved into midfield in the first game, as Maresca sees more opportunities for him.

Enzo Fernandez, the club’s record acquisition after joining from Chelsea on deadline day, was not immediately appointed to the leadership team.

Manchester City confirm their captains for new season

When asked if new acquisition Enzo Fernández will be part of the leadership group, the City boss revealed:

 “No, the captains are Rúben, Erling, Marc Guéhi and Donnarumma.”

The Argentine international was a vital enforcer for Maresca at Chelsea. The manager was eager to reconcile with him when he came to City this summer.

Fernández, along with fellow new players Illiman Ndiaye and Allan, who joined earlier this week before the summer transfer window closed, are all available for selection tomorrow.
