Top five forwards you must keep an eye out for in Euro 2020
Some of the world's best attackers will be in action in the continental showpiece.
The UEFA Euro 2020 is set to begin in a few days’ time. The top European countries will again be at loggerheads to clinch the title after navigating through the qualifiers. The prestigious tournament is one of the most competitive international contests, due to the level of talent at display.
The participating teams have selected some of the finest attacking talents in world football in order to win the coveted tournament. These forwards will shoulder the responsibility of scoring the goals that would help their team to advance further.
Here are the top five forwards to watch out for in UEFA Euro 2020.
5. Romelu Lukaku - Belgium
Belgium is the no.1 ranked team in the world and one of the favourites heading into the tournament. The Red Devils will have Romelu Lukaku leading their attacking line. The Inter Milan striker is a lethal forward who has an eye for goals in every competition he plays in.
The forward scored 30 goals and provided 10 assists in 44 overall games for the Nerazzuri during the 2020/21 season. He was one of the driving forces behind Inter Milan’s Serie A league-winning season. The golden generation of Belgium footballers must deliver an international major honour and Lukaku will play a central role in doing so.
4. Robert Lewandowski - Poland
Robert Lewandowski is currently one of the best forwards in the world based on form. The Polish international scored 41 goals in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. He broke the previous record held by Gerd Muller (40 goals) and became the player to score the most number of goals in a single league campaign.
Poland will heavily rely on their talismanic striker to deliver on the international stage. The outfit is grouped with Sweden, Spain and Slovakia. Poland’s supporters will hope that the Bayern Munich star can replicate his performance from the 2020/21 season and help them reach the latter stages of Euro 2020.
3. Harry Kane - England
The Three Lions are one of the favourites and have some serious attacking talent in the squad. Harry Kane will be the focal point of their gameplay and the Tottenham Hotspur forward will look to lead the team by example. The Englishman had an extremely impressive season in the Premier League, where he scored 23 goals and provided 14 assists.
Gareth Southgate will hope that the striker can impose himself on the international stage. Securing the Golden Boot in the 2020/21 season justifies Kane’s talents. He became only the second-player in Premier League history to finish as top-scorer and top assist-provider.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal
Defending champions Portugal have a genuinely lethal attacking depth in their squad. Players like Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes and Andre Silva are some of the names who will feature in Euro 2020 for Fernando Santos’s side. However, Cristiano Ronaldo will once again be the main threat going forward.
The skipper of the Portugal national team will perhaps play his final Euros before bidding adieu to international football. The 36-year-old scored a whopping 29 goals in Serie A for Juventus last season, finishing as the top goal-scorer in the competition. Age is no factor when Ronaldo is part of the discussion and he often flourishes on the big stage.
1. Kylian Mbappe - France
Kylian Mbappe will be the center of attention once the tournament kicks off. The Paris Saint-Germain forward had yet another fruitful season where he managed 42 goals and 11 assists in merely 47 games. France come into the tournament as reigning world champions after winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The 22-year-old was one of the success stories for Les Bleus at the World Cup and has only improved since then. France are in the group of death alongside heavyweights Germany and Portugal. Mbappe will look to deliver from the first whistle and he will definitely play a huge role if the outfit are to qualify for the knockouts. His partnership with Karim Benzema, who returns to the national team after a period of six years, is also highly anticipated.
