European Parliament calls for investigation into President Gianni Infantino during FIFA World Cup 2026

Folarin Balogun’s red card was overturned by FIFA, causing immense outrage.

The controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s overturned suspension at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has escalated beyond football. Members of the European Parliament are now calling for an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, raising questions over whether political influence played a role in the decision to allow the United States forward to feature in the Round of 16.

A cross-party group of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) has urged the football associations of all 27 European Union member states to request a formal investigation through FIFA’s Ethics Committee. The lawmakers want clarity on whether pressure from US President Donald Trump influenced FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic one-match ban.

The latest development adds to growing criticism from football authorities and political leaders across Europe, with several questioning FIFA’s handling of one of the tournament’s most controversial disciplinary decisions.

Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 after catching Tarik Muharemovic with a late challenge. Under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, the dismissal carried an automatic one-match suspension, meaning the striker was expected to miss the USA’s Round of 16 meeting with Belgium.

However, in a stunning turn of events, FIFA overturned the suspension before the knockout clash. The governing body reportedly relied on Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations, which allows its judicial bodies to suspend the implementation of a disciplinary sanction under exceptional circumstances while placing the sanctioned individual under a probationary period.

The decision immediately divided opinion. Reports suggested it was the first time such a provision had been used to lift a suspension during a FIFA World Cup since red cards were introduced.

The controversy intensified after Donald Trump confirmed that he had personally spoken to Gianni Infantino regarding Balogun’s dismissal. Although the US president insisted he did not pressure FIFA or ask for special treatment, he admitted to telling Infantino that he believed the red card was unfair.

Following the reversal, Trump publicly thanked the FIFA chief for what he called “correcting a great injustice”.

Balogun was subsequently available for selection against Belgium, where the USA suffered a 4-1 defeat. The Belgian Football Federation later questioned the striker’s eligibility, while UEFA reportedly described FIFA’s decision as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable”.

European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef also criticised the ruling, calling it “a wrong decision,” while former UEFA communications director William Gaillard argued that the move contradicted FIFA’s own disciplinary framework.

European lawmakers demand accountability

The campaign for an investigation is being led by Irish MEP Barry Andrews alongside Lara Wolters and Niels Fuglsang. In a letter circulating among members of the European Parliament, the lawmakers argue that the integrity of the FIFA World Cup 2026 has been undermined by the decision to overturn Balogun’s suspension during the tournament.

According to the letter, European football associations should formally ask FIFA’s Ethics Committee to investigate the process that led to the lifting of the ban and determine whether political pressure influenced the outcome.

The MEPs have also called for senior FIFA officials to be held accountable if any breach of political neutrality is established. The letter reportedly has the backing of dozens of lawmakers and also references previous concerns surrounding FIFA’s decision to award Donald Trump the FIFA Peace Prize.

Barry Andrews did not hold back in his criticism, claiming FIFA had once again “bowed to the demands of the Trump administration” and describing the disciplinary reversal as “a disgrace and a perversion of justice.”

Despite mounting criticism, Infantino has maintained that neither he nor the FIFA presidency played any role in overturning Balogun’s suspension.

Speaking during the FIFA World Cup 2026, the FIFA President acknowledged receiving a phone call from Trump but stressed that conversations with world leaders are a routine part of his responsibilities.

“FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected.”

Infantino also confirmed that Trump had contacted him regarding the incident involving Balogun.

“Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues.”

He reiterated that the final decision was taken solely by FIFA’s independent disciplinary bodies and not by the president’s office.

FIFA has continued to defend the process, insisting the suspension was lifted in accordance with its disciplinary regulations. Nevertheless, the growing calls from European lawmakers ensure that the controversy surrounding Balogun’s eligibility and Infantino’s role in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
