The one-time Champions League winner Man City will hope to add another this season.

Manchester City’s Champions League campaign in 2026-27 begins tonight with an away game against Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto.

Despite being considered the favourites to win the title, the Cityzens only conquered the continent once under Pep Guardiola’s supervision. Their best achievement came during the 2022-23 season. They have since been eliminated three times in a row by Real Madrid.

They’ve appeared miles behind the competition in consecutive years, but they’re looking to re-establish themselves at Europe’s top table in Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge.

City have supervised a costly but critically quick summer reconstruction. They can still rely on Erling Haaland’s uncanny goalscoring tendencies. His header against Coventry City on Saturday allowed Maresca’s team to retain their perfect start to the Premier League season.

Porto, meanwhile, won the Primeira Liga title during Francesco Farioli’s rookie year. The young Italian coach is gearing up for his management debut in the league. Tuesday’s hosts have picked up where they left off last campaign, winning their first five league matches.

However, Porto have never defeated Manchester City in a competitive situation, losing three of their previous four meetings in European play. The only semi-positive outcome was a goalless Champions League tie in a December 2020 group-stage encounter.
