The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has suffered a major setback with China officially deciding not to participate in the tournament scheduled to take place later this year the September FIFA window according to multiple reports.
This decision means that one of the tournament’s biggest invited nations will no longer be part of the inaugural tournament hosted by FIFA. The question now arises is that what was the reason behind this and who are going to replace the Chinese football team as initially they accepted the invite sent to them.

Australia can be a good possibility if FIFA decides to invite the Soceroos. Their inclusion in this tournament could significantly boost the competition as it will be a high-profile inclusion keeping in mind that they are now regulars in the FIFA World Cup. However, there are no reports as of now that they have been approached but can be a good option.
Another name could be of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh football team have seen a rapid rise in attracting crowds and can be very helpful for the tournament’s overall viewership. Although nothing is reported, they are another option.
New Zealand could be another option for FIFA. Having participated in the FIFA World Cup 2026, their inclusion could do wonders for the tournament in terms of high profile invites.
