FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 to take place in September

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially confirmed Pakistan’s participation the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 in September, becoming another non ASEAN nation to accept FIFA’s invitation for the tournament.

The tournament already saw China officially pull out from participating. However, Pakistan now joins the tournament, ranked 198th in the FIFA ranking, it is yet to be decided which division will Pakistan be a part of in the tournament. They will use the tournament as a valuable platform to gain experience and also prepare for the upcoming FIFA qualifiers next year.

How FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 can benefit Pakistan football

This tournament can be very important for Pakistan football as they are ready to take part in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The Pakistani team have a golden opportunity to gain regular match experience against competitive opponents on a global level and test the team’s overall preparedness and team chemistry.

Ranked 198th in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, the Pakistani team have struggled for consistent competitive matches. However, this tournament will allow the team to test itself and provide crucial exposure as they gear up for the FIFA qualifiers.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is divided into two groups, Division 1 and Division 2. Pakistan due to its ranking will feature in the Division two of the tournament.

India are also taking part in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup and will compete in Division 1.

China’s FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 withdrawal fiasco

While Pakistan have confirmed its participation, recently China officially opted out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after accepting FIFA’s invite earlier.

This decision means that the tournament’s biggest invited nation will no longer be part of the inaugural tournament hosted by FIFA. The question now arises is that what was the reason behind this and who are going to replace the Chinese football team as initially they accepted the invite sent to them.

However, FIFA is now expected to actively find another non ASEAN nation to replace China.

Although nothing has been announced officially as of now, several other non ASEAN nations could emerge as realistic replacements going forward.
