FIFA U-15 World Cup format explained

FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival Format

First thing to know about this competition is that this World Cup will not be played on a traditional 11 vs 11 format; instead, FIFA implemented an 8 vs 8 format, which might help the players to build connections and get the proper time to play at the highest level with the ball on their feet.

A total of 14 players can be registered in each team, with two goalkeepers, but only 8 players can feature on the ground to play the games. All players must be born between 2011 and 2012, which will make them eligible to play, as unlimited rolling substitutions are on the cards.

  • In the qualification stage, 32 groups were divided into six or seven teams, as all the games will be played in a round-robin format.
  • All will play a single match with every opponent from their groups, but no one will be eliminated from the qualification stage and will get direct entry to the tournament stage.
  • Winners will face winners and runners-up will face runners-up with a cross elimination format.
  • No extra time, the match will go into a direct penalty shootout for the results.
  • Every team is expected to play seven to ten games, and after the final results are tallied, multiple trophies should be awarded.

India is set to take part in the World Cup

As FIFA has sent all their member associations an invitation to feature in the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup 2026, India has also received the invitation to play in the World Cup, and AIFF has officially confirmed India’s participation as Bibiano Fernandes will lead the team as the head coach while Ranjit Bajaj takes the managerial duties of the side.

This has been a golden opportunity for the Indian U-15 Men’s National Football Team as they are surely playing in the first edition of the tournament, as it gives them exposure and also helps them understand how to prepare for the highest level of the World Cup.
