Spain secured a gritty 1-0 win over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. La Roja became only the second nation to become both European and world champions simultaneously, clinching their second World Cup trophy after 2016.
The 90 minutes of regulation time saw a cagey affair, with neither side fashioning any clear-cut chances. La Roja were certainly on the front foot, having a fair few attempts at goal, while preventing their opponents from registering a single shot throughout that period.
La Albiceleste, already struggling to break the Spanish defence, made their task much harder when Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Pau Cubarsi. Emiliano Martinez made a super save to deny Lamine Yamal’s free-kick, sending the match to extra time.
The European champions continued to squander numerous chances, and Nico Williams had a goal overturned due to a foul on Nicolas Otamendi. The breakthrough moment came soon after the restart of the second half of extra time.
Pedro Porro’s cross was met by Nico Williams, who teed up Ferran Torres. The latter calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net past Emiliano Martínez. This strike proved to be the winning goal, helping La Roja clinch a rather hard-fought victory.
