FIFA World Cup 2026 updated bracket after Argentina vs Cape Verde in Round of 32

Argentina eliminated Cape Verde from the tournament.

Argentina have defeated Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the pre-quarterfinals. Scoring his 7th goal of the ongoing World Cup campaign, Lionel Messi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, courtesy of an assist from Lisandro Martinez.

To equal the match, Deroy Duarte found the goal for the Blue Sharks in the 59th minute. After zero shots on target in the first half, Cape Verde managed to score an important goal, assisted by Ryan Mendes. The regulation time ended 1-1.

Lisandro Martinez (92′) helped La Albiceleste regain their lead in extra time, but it was later cancelled by Sindy Lopes Cabral’s exquisite effort (103′).

Later, Cristian Romero scored the third goal for the defending champions in the 111th minute, but it was later given as an own goal in Diney Borges’ name. However, the Blue Sharks gave it their all against Argentina on the grandest stage, but the match ended 3-2 in favour of the defending champions.
