The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final stage concluded on July 11.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals came to an end on Saturday. Four teams booked their places in the semi-finals of the expanded 48-team edition in North America. Argentina became the final team to seal a semi-final spot.
They did so with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Switzerland at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. La Albiceleste took an early lead when Lionel Messi’s corner was headed in by Alexis Mac Allister in the 10th minute. However, the Schweizer-Nati fought back valiantly, resulting in Dan Ndoye’s equaliser in the 67th minute.
The European side suffered a massive setback when Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card in the 72nd minute for simulation. 10-man Swiss held off the Argentine attack, forcing the match into extra time.
Julian Alvarez then netted a superb goal from outside the box in the 112th minute, curling the ball past Gregor Kobel into the top corner. Lautaro Martinez then added a third goal deep inside extra time. That strike sealed the victory, booking the defending champions’ place in the semi-finals, where they will face England.
