FIFA World Cup 2026 updated bracket after Australia vs Egypt in Round of 32

Egypt eliminated Australia from the tournament.

Egypt defeated Australia 1-1 (4-2) to advance to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Eman Ashour broke the deadlock in the 13th minute with a header in the left corner of the goal. However, the remainder of the first half was rather monotonous.

Nevertheless, in the second half, an own goal by Mohamed Hany helped the Socceroos equalise the scoreline 1-1 (55′). Hany set an unwanted record in the tournament, becoming the first player to score two own goals in the same World Cup.

With no more goals scored in the regulation, the game was forced into extra time, but the score remained the same. Matt Ryan was brought in by Australia as Patrick Beach’s replacement for the penalty shootout. The shootout started with Harry Souttar missing the first attempt.

However, all the penalties were being scored in the game until Lucas Herrington missed, the second for Australia. Hossam Abdelmahuid scored the winning penalty for Egypt.
