The Round of 32 stage of the FIFA World Cup will end on July 3.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 has entered its knockout stages, with the Round of 32 halfway complete. Belgium became the eighth team to qualify for the last 16 with a dramatic 3-2 win over Senegal at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, on July 1.

Despite being the underdogs, the Lions of Teranga started the match positively. Their efforts paid off in the 25th minute. Ismaila Sarr’s header was saved by Thibaut Courtois, but the loose ball fell into the path of Habib Diarra, who slotted it into an empty net.

The Red Devils grew into the match, but they suffered another setback when Sarr doubled the Senegalese advantage six minutes after the restart. The Crystal Palace attacker got in behind the defence and volleyed the ball past Courtois into the back of the net.

Belgium then mounted an incredible comeback. Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute. Youri Tielemans then found the back of the net 161 seconds later, sending the match to extra time.

There was further late drama, as VAR awarded a controversial penalty to the Red Devils right at the very end. Lamine Camara came sliding in inside the box and made contact with Tielemans. As a result, a spot kick was awarded, which Tielemans dispatched into the back of the net to clinch victory for the European side.

The result sealed Belgium’s place in the last 16, where they will face the winner of the match between the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
