The Round of 16 stage of the FIFA World Cup will end on July 7.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 stage is heating up, with the best teams in the expanded 48-team edition in North America vying for a place in the quarter-finals. Spain became the latest team to qualify for the last eight with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Portugal in their Round of 16 clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 6.

It was a cagey contest between the two in-form teams. There were few clear-cut chances, with most of the game being played in the middle of the park.

The breakthrough moment came in the 91st minute. Merino took a quick free-kick, and Ferran Torres teed up the Arsenal player with a sublime through ball. Merino took it on his left foot before slotting it into the bottom corner past Diogo Costa.

The goal sealed the win for La Roja, who booked their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the match between the USA and Belgium.
