The Switzerland vs Colombia match was the final Round of 16 fixture of the ongoing World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout phase has entered a crucial stage, as the eight best teams have secured their places in the quarter-finals of the expanded 48-team edition in North America.
Switzerland became the final team to progress to the last eight with a penalty-shootout win over Colombia in their Round of 16 clash at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on July 7.
Neither side could produce a breakthrough in the regulation period. There were plenty of chances to break the deadlock in extra time, but neither side could find a winner. As a result, the match went to a penalty shootout.
Davinson Sanchez and Manuel Akanji missed their respective spot-kicks, while Cucho Hernandez saw his effort saved brilliantly by Gregor Kobel. However, the Schweizer-Nati held on to their early advantage, and Ruben Vargas scored the winning penalty to seal a 4-3 victory in the shootout.
The result booked Switzerland’s place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Argentina.
