The first official meeting between the two nations came at the Tournoi de France in February 1988. Les Bleus edged a closely contested affair 2-1 to begin the rivalry on a winning note. While Morocco pushed the hosts throughout the match, the French showed their quality in the decisive moments to secure victory.
The teams met again a decade later in Casablanca during the King Hassan II Tournament in 1998. After an entertaining 2-2 draw over 90 minutes, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Morocco held their nerve to win 6-5, with French midfielder Youri Djorkaeff missing the decisive spot-kick.
Although Les Bleus remained unbeaten in regulation time, the Atlas Lions celebrated their first success over their European counterparts. Just eight months later, they welcomed Morocco to the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.
The reigning world champions, who were building towards their successful UEFA Euro 2000 campaign, claimed a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a solitary goal from Youri Djorkaeff. It was another disciplined display from Les Bleus against familiar opposition.
The rivalry returned to Casablanca in 2000. The French team produced one of their finest performances against Morocco. Les Bleus dominated from the opening whistle and cruised to a comprehensive 5-1 victory, showcasing the strength of a golden generation that would go on to enjoy tremendous international success.
After a seven-year gap, the nations met at the Stade de France in November 2007. The friendly turned into an entertaining contest, with both sides finding the net twice. Late goals at either end ensured the spoils were shared in what remains the only draw between the two countries in Sports Mole’s official head-to-head record.
The most memorable meeting came on football’s biggest stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Morocco had become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. Les Bleus ended their historic journey with a 2-0 victory.
