Both France and Morocco have been dominant so far in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The first quarterfinal in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to be a cracker as France and Morocco face each other for a semifinal berth. The African nation has proved that their 2022 run was not a fluke. Les Bleus, on the other hand, have generational attacking talent in their ranks.

France beat Morocco 2-0 in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Atlas Lions will be hungry for revenge. They are arguably now a stronger team than their 2022 squad.

Here are five key battles on the pitch that could determine who wins this match:

5. Kylian Mbappe vs Issa Diop

With 30 defensive contributions and 21 clearances against his name, Issa Diop has had a respectable World Cup. The Moroccan central defender has conceded just two goals in four games while on the field. He also scored a game-saving goal against the Netherlands in the round of 32.

Though Issa Diop has been brilliant, facing prime Kylian Mbappe will be a challenging battle for the 29-year-old. Mbappe has scored seven goals and has assisted his teammates twice. Overall, the France national team captain has attempted 26 shots, of which 17 have been on target in this World Cup.

Even one mistake could be costly for Issa Diop and his team; hence, he will have to be at the top of his game for its entirety.

4. Bradley Barcola vs Achraf Hakimi

Bradley Barcola has scored two goals and has provided one assist in the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, the French left winger has been overshadowed in attack by his teammates.

Achraf Hakimi, on the other hand, has a goal and two assists in this World Cup. The Morocco national team captain has been quite active defensively and in attack. He has constantly driven the ball up the right wing for his nation.

This encounter will be interesting. Morocco will be looking to start more of their attacks from the right to keep Hakimi and Brahim Diaz involved in the game.

3. Ousmane Dembele vs Noussair Mazraoui

Ousmane Dembele has scored four goals in this World Cup. He has already given two assists to his teammates. However, the pattern to almost all of his shots has been very similar. The Paris Saint-Germain star has preferred to cut in before taking a shot.

Noissair Mazaraoui’s role in the Moroccan defence will be crucial to keep the current Ballon d’Or winner at bay. The Manchester United defender has made 47 defensive contributions and 17 recoveries in the tournament so far. It shows his commitment to the Moroccan team and the country.

2. William Saliba vs Soufiane Rahimi

Ismael Saibari was substituted early after he picked up discomfort in his hamstring against Canada. Likely, Saibari will not be available against France. Even if he is, he may not be able to play the entire game.

Soufiane Rahimi will be Saibari’s replacement, if need be. The forward scored against Canada in the round of 16 match. Overall, Rahimi has two goals in the World Cup and will be high on confidence going into the next game.

William Saliba, on the other hand, has been a rock at the back for France. The centreback has had 28 defensive contributions, made 19 clearances and 15 recoveries. The Arsenal player will be the one to beat in the French backline once again.

1. Brahim Diaz vs Lucas Digne

Brahim Diaz has been quite effective for Morocco in this World Cup. The Real Madrid player has four assists to his name.

He has been his nation’s best chance-creator on the pitch. The only place for improvement could be that Brahim has not taken many shots in the tournament.

Lucas Digne, the French left-back, will be tasked with stopping Brahim. The Aston Villa player has 19 defensive contributions and has made 15 clearances.

Morocco’s chances will mainly be created from the right. Hence, Lucas’ role will be very important in this quarterfinal game.

Who will France face in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final?

Les Bleus will face Morocco in the quarter‑final. The match will be played on July 9, 2026 (BST) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

When is the match?

Friday, 10 July at 1:30 am IST.
