Barcelona issue Gavi injury update after LaLiga win over Elche

Gavi has avoided a serious injury as Barcelona issued a statement after he was forced off during the club’s win over Elche.
Barcelona began their LaLiga championship defence with a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche on Sunday, with Raphinha and Fermin Lopez scoring twice each and Karim Adeyemi converting on his first competitive appearance for the Blaugrana.
However, there was a disturbing sight late in the first half, when the midfielder was dragged off in tears after falling and holding his right knee.
Gavi’s career has been hampered by knee problems, as he missed the second part of the 2023-24 season, in addition to Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
He was also out from August to March of the previous season after needing surgery to repair a medial meniscus rupture in the same knee.

When asked about Gavi’s health following Sunday’s game, Flick stated:
“It’s his knee. We have to wait. It’s a little better than he expected when he got injured. After the game he was much better. We will do an MRI and see.”
Gavi made his senior debut for Barcelona in August 2021, making 76 starts in his first two seasons, but just 42 since the conclusion of 2022-23.
He played 42 games in 2024-25, although only 20 of those were starts, after his first severe injury restricted him to 15 games in 2023-24.
Gavi made just 13 outings in the 2025-26 season in all competitions, eight of which were starts.

“First-team player Gavi took a knock to his right knee during yesterday’s game. Medical tests carried out this morning have confirmed that it is only a bruise. He is expected to return to training shortly.”
