A custodian from the ninth tier of English football has been appointed as the new monarch of Uganda’s traditional kingdom.
George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, represents southeast London club SE Dons. He might soon trade in his custodian gloves for a crown after being named the Tooro people’s future omukama, or king.
George Desmond Kamurasi, nicknamed “Big G” at the Bexleyheath-based club, was chosen after his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, died last month.
According to Ugandan media sources, George Desmond Kamurasi received votes from 15 of the 18 members of Tooro’s royal succession committee on Friday. An official announcement is likely after Oyo’s funeral this weekend.

Kamurasi hasn’t spoken publicly on his nomination, but Ugandan website Spy Uganda reports, citing insiders close to the transition process, that he is hesitant to leave his life in London to take up the post.
The 6-foot-6 custodian has emerged as a key character at SE Dons, which were created in 2014 by British rapper Don Strapzy. The club originally earned a significant following on YouTube before joining the English football pyramid.
Kamurasi frequently appears in the club’s social media posts. He is renowned for giving emotional, often expletive-laden speeches to his players before games.
SE Dons are enjoying their debut season in the FA Cup, defeating Erith Town 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the second qualifying round.
Kamurasi’s football activities may interfere with events surrounding the royal succession. The burial of Oyo, who assumed the throne at the age of three in 1995, is slated for this weekend in Uganda, during which SE Dons will also meet Greenways in the FA Vase’s second qualifying round.
Uganda is ruled by an elected president and parliament, but numerous traditional kingdoms continue to wield major cultural influence despite their lack of political authority.
