Five-star Sporting Goa outclass Vasco in Goa Pro League
Victorino Fernandes and Marcus Mascarenhas registered a set of braces in the Flaming Orange’s victory.
Sporting Clube de Goa came from a goal down to register a commanding 5-1 win over Vasco Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium on Wednesday.
Vasco coach Micky Fernandes made few changes to his side following a draw in the last match against Bardez FC as Myran Pereira and Moises D’Sa were back in the lineup, while, Shubham Rao Dessai and Denvil Fernandes made the first start for the Port Towners. On the other hand, Sporting Coach Mateus Costa made only two changes as Egyptian midfielder Fady Riad and U-20 defender Suresh Thapa found their names in the starting XI.
Sporting were unlucky not to lead in the early minutes as Cajetan Fernandes saw his curling freekick denied by the crossbar. Whereas Vasco had a chance to stun the defending champions in the 15th minutes when Aman nicely curled the ball to Shubham but Sporting custodian Melroy Fernandes came off his line to intercept the same to keep his side safe.
However, he could not manage to keep his side safe for long as the Port Towners surged ahead in the 19th minutes when Beneston Barretto found U-20 winger Hussain Pinjar with a pin-point cross, who brilliantly placed the ball in the net to make it 1-0.
Sporting were lucky to find the equaliser in the 33rd minutes as Marcus Mascarenhas shot from outside the box deflected off Vasco defender Lenstan Afonso and beat the keeper Sanju Thapa under the bar making it all equal for the Flaming Orange.
Sporting wasted two easy chances in the next 10 minutes to surge ahead as first, a perfect cross from Brandon was headed out by Fady, while a few minutes later, Marcus shot wide from inside the box with Vasco keeper completely out of position.

However, in the added time, the Panjim based club got another easy chance to take the lead when Vasco defender Sanwil D’Costa made a rough tackle on Ganesh Thakur inside the box to give away the penalty to the opponents. Cajetan stepped ahead and sent the Vasco keeper the wrong way to make it 2-1 for his side at the half-time.
