Cavelossim finished at the bottom of the table with just 16 points from 22 matches

Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim failed to avoid the relegation as they lost to Dempo Sports Club by a 4-2 margin in their final Goa Professional League encounter played under floodlights at Duler Stadium earlier in the evening. With this win, Dempo kept their hopes alive in the title race as they have 44 points from 19 matches.

Dempo who had defeated the same opponents in the last match had few changes as defender Shallum Pires was back in the lineup, while their coach Samir Naik also named Gaurish Naik and Desmon Pereira in the starting XI, whereas   Cavelossim coach made only one change as striker Semson Fernandes found his name in the starting XI for the South Goan club.

Dempo started on an attacking note and took just four minutes to open the account as Velito Cruz nicely chipped the ball in the net from the close after getting a defence-splitting through pass from Beevan D’Mello to put his side into an early lead.

Cavelossim quickly regrouped and came close to equalise in the 6th minute but Samson Simoes shot wide from inside off Allwyn Vaz’s. At the other end, Kapil Hoble made a superb run on the right wing and shot on the goal from just inside the box but Cavelossim keeper Razak Devsor nicely blocked it for safety.

Another chance went into the vain for the Golden Eagles in the 15th minutes when Desmon was left with just keeper to beat but Cavelossim custodian brilliantly thwarted him to limit the damage of his side. Whereas, Cavelossim striker Simoes wasted another chance in 27th minutes when Moises D’Sa set up him with just Dempo keeper Agnelo Gomes at the stake with a quickly taken free-kick from just outside the box but the striker failed to put power in his shot from close.

Very next minute, Dempo should have doubled their lead when defender Naveen Mendes was in the commanding position in the box but Cavelossim keeper Razak denied him with a superb block. Whereas, Dempo keeper Agnelo also made a superb save in the 37th minutes when Cavelossim skipper Ashley Araujo curled the ball to Allwyn in the box but his header was divingly saved by the Dempo shot-stopper.

After wasting many chances, Dempo finally managed to double their lead in the 41st minute when Kapil tapped in from close to Desmon’s low cross to make it 2-0 for the Golden Eagles.  Cavelossim came out stronger in the second session and reduced their margin within seven minutes when Samson made a short pass to Nevile Fernandes in the box who shot past keeper Agnelo from close to make it 2-1 for the South Goan club.

However, Dempo restored their two-goal lead in the 54th minute when Nickson Castanha’s curling cross was nicely headed in by Beevan making it 3-1 for Dempo. At the other end, Samson finally managed to get his name on the score sheet in the 67th minute when his strike from outside the box to bring the match on an interesting note with a 3-2 margin.

However, it was Dempo who once again scored in the 84th minute when Velito completed his brace with a curling shot from the top of the box which gave no chance to Cavelossim keeper Razak.
