Today’s win helped the Junior Gaurs to climb to third in the league.

Vasco Sports Club played their heart out but it was not enough to overcome over 10-men FC Goa as they managed to register a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Port Towners in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

With this win, Goan climbed to the 3rd position with 28 points from 16 matches, while Vasco has 17 points from 17 outings.

Goan had the upper hand when both the teams met in the last round match as the junior Gaurs had defeated the Port Towners by 3-1 in the last week.

Vasco skipper Schubert Pereira along with defender Sushant Borkar and keeper Amit Biswas were back in the starting XI for the Port Towners, while, Isaac Negredo, Krishna Pandit and Aaron D’Silva made the comeback in the Goans playing XI.

Vasco stunned the opponents with an early goal when Vasco defender Minesh Kunkolkar’s powerful shot curled in the net from the top of the box to make it 1-0 for his side in the 12th minutes.

Goans also had a chance to equalise within just five minutes from the opening goal when Krishna found Sarineo Fernandes in the box but his shot rebound off the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Vasco almost doubled their lead when Franky Oliveiro’s shot was crashing in the goal at the far post but Goan keeper Mohammad Nawaz tipped it for a corner.

At the other end, Goan found the equaliser through Krishna who after receiving a through pass from Yasir Mohammad easily cut past Vasco defender Myran Pereira and slotted the ball home from close in the 24th minutes.

It was just three minutes passed from the equaliser when Goan scored another and took the lead as this time Yasir made a brilliant footwork cutting past almost six opponents in his run from the halfway line and shot past keeper Amit from the top of the box to put his side into the lead.

In the 35th minutes, Goans were reduced to 10 men when their defender Brian Faria was sent off after second booking of the match for a tackle on Vasco winger Flan Gomes.

The rest of the session witnessed Vasco taking advantage of the extra man on the field and marched many times on the rivals but Goan defender stood tall to clear every danger.

The second half witnessed complete dominance form the Port Towners as they continuously penetrated opponents last line but the Goan defence led by Meldon D’Silva and Franzil stood tall.

Two quick attacks from Vasco went into vain as first Schubert saw his powerful shot missed the target by hairline distance, while two minutes later, Franky failed to connect from inside the box off Schubert’s through pass.

Goan had the only chance of the session in the 83rd minutes when substitute Lalawnpuia headed on the goal off Yasir’s cross but Vasco keeper Amit pushed it for a corner, while, the Goan keeper also came with a brilliant save as he denied Flan’s weak shot from inside the box.
