Defending champions Salgaocar hammer Vasco for seven in GPL Port Town Derby
Nigerian striker Joel Sunday scored four goals in the Green Brigade’s win.
Salgaocar FC registered a commanding 7-1 win over Vasco Sports Club in the Port Town derby match of the Goa Professional League played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
With these three points, Salgaocar has 26 points from 15 outings, while Vasco are struggling in the bottom half with just 20 points from 20 matches.
Salgaocar coach Norbert Gonsalves made only one change to his side which hammered Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim by 8-3 in the last match as Joaquim Carvalho found his name in the starting XI, whereas Vasco who had defeated Panjim Footballers in the previous round match had two changes as Schubert Pereira and Godfray Mascarenhas were back in the starting XI.
It was just four minute when Salgaocar drew the first blood in the match as Sanson Pereira’s long ranger rebounded off the side post which rolled to unmarked Nigerian striker force Joel Sunday in the box who made an easy tap in to put Salgaocar into the lead.
In the next minute, U-20 striker Devendra Murgaonkar made it 2-0 when Mackroy Peixote powerful shot from the top deflected off Vasco defender Myran Pereira and landed into the U-20 forward whose powerful strike hit the far post and finished in the back of the nylons to make it 2-0 for Salgaocar.
Vasco regrouped from the two quick goals and marched many times on the opponents but Slagoacr defenders Joaquim, Nigerian Keita Boubacar, Sanson and Assumption Soares killed every move in the final third.
At the other end, Salgaocar had a chance to score the third goal in the 32nd minutes when Mackroy sent a fine cross to Devendra in the box but the U-20 striker headed wide from the goalmouth.
However, with just two minutes left to the half-time whistle, Sunday made it 3-0 when he nicely jelled up with Devendra from the halfway line with brilliant one-two passing and made an easy tap-in from close to put Salgaocar on the driver seat at the half-time. Salgaocar further inflated their lead in the 53rd minutes when their skipper Gilbert Oliveira calmly finished the ball in the net from inside the box to make it 4-0 in the early second session.

Next, Umesh Harijan’s sparkling strike from the 25 yards gave no chance to Vasco keeper Amit making it 6-1 for the Green Brigade.
In the dying minutes of the match, Sunday scored his fourth goal when he surprised keeper Amit with a swift strike from the top of the box which entered the bottom corner for Salgaocar’s seventh goal of the match.
