GPL 2019-20: Velsao edge Corps of Signals in basement thriller

Rohan Kambli's goal just before half-time proved to be decisive for the visitors.

In a battle of the bottom placed teams, Velsao Sports & Cultural Club walked away with three points against Corps of Signals following their 3-2 in the Goa Professional League match played at MTR Ground, Navelim, on Tuesday. Shubham Rao Dessai (38’), Joseph Pereira (44’) and Rohan Kambli (45+1) scored for Velsao while Signals netted through Pawan Thakur (49’) and Huidrom Singh (83’). By virtue of this win, Velsao SCC move on to seven points from ten games, on level with Corps of Signals, however with a superior head to head record the Velsao leapfrog Signals. Signals now are at the bottom with similar points having played a game less then their opponents. After playing end to end football, Velsao finally opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Shubham Rao who scored after capitalizing on a poor pass from the rival goalkeeper and scored to give his side the lead. Velsao who were pressing in search of goals scored their second in the 44th minute through skipper Joseph who scored from the box. The skipper just can’t stop scoring at this venue, as this is this fourth goal at this venue in two games as last season he scored a hat-trick. Rohan Kambli stepped over and coolly converted from the spot. The winners were three goals up at the break. Crossing over, Signals did try to get in the game and managed to pull a goal back through Pawan Thakur, who headed in a cross from the flank, 1-3. Signals managed to scored one more goal in the final 10 minutes of the game through Huidrom however they fell short of the equalizing goal.
