I-League 2017 Team of the Round 5
East Bengal climbed to the top of the table as both their title rivals dropped points...
It was another round of exciting action and plenty of talking points in the I-League as teams at the top and the bottom all made moves in the opposite direction.
East Bengal went top of the table, as Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC both droped points. Chennai picked up their first win, while Aizawl FC fell to their first defeat.
In the first game of Round 5, DSK Shivajians put an end to Mohun Bagan’s four game winning streak with a goalless draw in Pune. It was an exciting game in which both teams had plenty of chances, but neither were able to find the goal.
Churchill Brothers followed in Shivajians' footsteps in the second game of this gameweek as the Goan side handed the reigning champions Bengaluru FC their second defeat of the season. Anthony Wolfe and Chesterpoul Lyngdoh scored the two goals for Churchill Brothers and the Bengaluru skipper Sunil Chhetri scored the only goal for the visitors.
An floundering Mumbai side were edged by Shillong Lajong in the following game, which they lost 3-1. Asier Dipanda scored a brace followed by another goal by Konsham Singh for Shillong Lajong. Karan Sawhney scored the only goal for Santosh Kashyap’s men at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong.
Aizawl FC were stunned by newcomers Chennai City FC as they were defeated 2-0 by the Chennai-based club. Second half strikes by Marcos Tank and Charles kept the high flying Aizawl FC at bay as the home team secured three valuable points.
However, despite the trend of disappointment East Bengal held their ground in the final League match of Round 5 as they stormed Minerva Punjab FC in an away game in Ludhiana which they won 5-0. Wedson Anselme scored a hat-trick for the away team, followed by clinical strikes by Robin Singh and Willis Plaza. The Red and Gold brigade claimed the top spot in the League standings with their win over Minerva Punjab and are followed by Mohun Bagan in second place.
