Mohun Bagan sign defender Lalramchullova from cross-town rivals East Bengal

The defender was one of the best players in the top flight last season.

Mohun Bagan have completed the signing of Lalramchullova from bitter rivals, East Bengal FC. The defender was a key part of EBFC's CFL title success in the 2018 season and has been one of the I-League's most consistent performers of recent years.

The signing represents a massive coup for the Mariners who will be looking to improve on a dissapointing 2018-2019 I-League season. Chullova was reportedly close to signing a deal with ISL side Chennaiyin FC who were hoping to shore up their defence with young Indian talents.

However, Kibu Vicuna has done a commendable job in convincing Lalram Chullova to join his side despite the uncertain situation the I-League finds itself in. The Spaniard stated that he was looking to bring in signings that would make the fans of the grand old club proud of their side again and this signing looks to be doing just that with several Mariners fans expressing their joy on getting one over on their rivals from across the city.

Mohun Bagan shipped in 28 goals in just 20 games in the 2018-2019 I-League season, scoring just 27. In contrast EBFC scored 37 and just allowed 20 over the same time period, just missing out on the I-League title.

This was in no small part due to Chullova's ability to play out from the back and dictate the game in defence. Vicuna will be hoping that the Mizo defender's addition to his squad will be key in them improving on their fifth placed I-League finish and challenging for the league.

It will be interesting to see the reception Chullova recieves from the highly passionate EBFC fans in the upcoming campaign.
