Afghanistan vs India: Head to head record

India have an upper hand in the h2h record against Afghanistan.

The Indian football team will continue their journey at the 2025 Nations Cup with their third group stage clash against Afghanistan on Thursday.

Blue Tigers’ perfect start to the competition was brought to an end by a mighty Iranian side who ended Khalid Jamil’s side a 0-3 defeat on Monday. The Blue Tigers did put up a strong defensive show, but it just wasn’t enough to contain the Asian giants.

Khalid Jamil’s side have given a good account of themselves at the competition, but there’s still one more to have a go at glory for Jamil’s men.

They looked brilliant in their opening encounter with Tajikistan and overcame the challenge against all odds to defeat the hosts before going down against Iran in their last game. Next up, Blue Tigers will go neck-to-neck against their neighbours, Afghanistan, for a right in the third-place match.

India’s Head-to-head record against Afghanistan

India and Afghanistan have faced each other a lot of times in the recent past. Afghanistan has become a familiar opponent across multiple competitions post the pandemic. While Blue Tigers have historically dominated the fixture by all means, Afghanistan have inflicted a few upsets in the process. 

This rivalry dates back 1951 where Blue Tigers thrashed their neighbours with a 3-0 win at the Asian Games. Both teams have come across each other 13 times in the past with Blue Tigers winning seven of those games. Afghanistan have managed just two wins while four games have ended in a stalemate. Interestingly, three of those draws have come in the last seven years.

The Blue Tigers remained undefeated against Afghanistan until 2013 when the visitors recorded their first win at the SAFF Championship. Afghanistan have shown a lot of courage and dedication when it comes to playing against India and have given a tough challenge on the pitch. The most recent meeting between the two sides was back in 2024 where Afghanistan stunned Blue Tigers with a 2-1 win in Guwahati.
