India lands 2 spots for AFC 2026-27 club competition

AFC released the slot allocation for 2026-27 club competition cycle

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has released the revised slot allocations for 2026-27 AFC club competition cycle which includes ACL Elite, ACL Two, and the AFC Challenge League (ACGL).

The slot allocation from AFC explains how many teams each member association can send across its three-tier structure directly and indirectly.

The Indian clubs will not be a part of the ACL Elite (Top tier) but will rather be part of the second tier of Asian club football tournament that is the ACL Two. Now let us take a look in detail how the system works for the Indian clubs and how there might still be problems around these.

Slots allocated to India

As per the slot allocation released by AFC, the Indian clubs have been given 2 spots in the Asian second tier club football that is the ACL Two.

They have one direct group stage spot in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two, which is expected to go to the Indian Super League (ISL) winners, along with one playoff (qualifier) berth that goes to the Super Cup winners.

That qualifying slot is already set to be taken by FC Goa as they are the Super Cup champions, who would need to come through the preliminary rounds to reach the main group stage.

Interesting scenarios

Now, let us take a look at few scenarios which could make things very interesting and all of it depends on who gets their hands on the ISL 2025-26 title.

Currently Mohun Bagan SG serve a 2 years ban from participating in AFC tournaments which means that If Mohun Bagan SG, who look strong favourites at the moment go on to win the ISL title, the direct group stage spot could very well pass on to the second placed team in the points table.

There’s also another interesting scenario to consider, if FC Goa themselves finish second while Mohun Bagan SG take the ISL title home, FC Goa would take the direct group stage slot, since they already hold the indirect playoff slot through the Super Cup triumph.

In that case, the qualifier (indirect) spot would likely shift down to the team finishing third, keeping the allocation balanced.

That means finishing second or third might carry just as much importance as winning the title or even more, at least in terms of continental representation.

Due to these interesting scenarios, the battle near the top half of the ISL points table is not just about getting the title.

Clubs like East Bengal FC, Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC will be keen to finish as high as possible, knowing that a strong league position could very well open the door to Asia for them.

Direct spot in trouble?

Well things might not be so simple for the Indian clubs, right now the slots allocated to the Indian clubs are 2, 1 direct spot to the ACL Two group stage meanwhile the other one is an indirect spot (Qualifying slot).

Under the AFC’s Member Association eligibility rules, nations that fail to meet the required criteria are only awarded indirect slots in continental competitions. And as Indian clubs have not fulfilled the minimum number of games played criteria for the top tier of a country that is set to be 27 matches for each team, it is likely the ACL 2 2026-27 direct group stage slot could be converted into a qualifier slot by the AFC. Which means even the ISL title holder of this season might have to play the qualifier round first.

So, two indirect spots to the ACL 2 is a possibility for the Indian clubs and missing out on a direct spot could be a very bad news for the Indian clubs.
