India will face Hong Kong on March 31st in Kochi

The qualifiers for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 were decided long ago, with India grouped alongside Singapore, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. Carrying high expectations and aspirations, the Indian national football team began their qualifying campaign.

However, as things stand, India are no longer in contention to qualify for the tournament. Despite this, their final fixture against familiar opponents Hong Kong is still set to be played in Kochi.

The Indian National Football Team will face the Hong Kong National Football Team on the 31st of March 2026, as part of the final round of Group C fixtures in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The match is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi and will kick off at 7:00 PM IST.

The encounters between the Indian team and Hong Kong were always very tricky and contested, with a good scoreline. Both of the teams have played 18 games against each other, where the Indian team have a slight edge over Hong Kong with seven wins under their belt.

Hong Kong won five games against India, and six games were drawn.

The match between the Blue Tigers and Hong Kong was an international friendly, held with a 2-2 draw. Hong Kong welcomed the Indian team at the Hong Kong Stadium on February 18th, 2006.

It was a congested match, which showed both teams’ attacking output as well as their defensive lapses.

Hong Kong dominated the game from the very first kick, as they scored early. Gerard scored for them, followed by Chun-Bong Law, who scored another to get a comfortable lead against them.

In the second half, Syed Nabi and Bhaichung Bhutia scored two late goals to secure a draw over the hosts.

Again, in Hong Kong, the Indian team was hosted on January 14th, 2009. Hong Kong secured another narrow victory as they continued their strong run of form against the Blue Tigers at home.

The game ended with a scoreline of 2-1 in favor of Hong Kong, as the game became boring and congested from both sides, but the hosts scored late to secure a win.

Yiu Chung scored the opening goal for the Red Dragons, which was equalized by Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia.

But the last nail in the coffin was put in by the hosts as they scored late. The Indian team’s effort created chances wiped out by the Hong Kong national team.

After just one year, India hosted Hong Kong at their home at that time to seek redemption as they lost both outlets when they faced Hong Kong at their home. On 4th October 2010, they played a friendly at the Balewadi Sports Complex, Pune, as it was the preparation game ahead of the AFC Asian Cup 2011.

At home, in front of the home crowd, the Blue Tigers were edged past by Hong Kong with a narrow margin of 1-0. They scored in the 80th minute of the game.

But now it’s the time for an important redemption as the Indian national team has been thoroughly dominated by the Red Dragons over the last meetings.

On June 14th, 2022, at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, the Blue Tigers thrashed Hong Kong 4-0. This match was played in front of 48,000 fans, and they got justice. India produced a commanding display at the VYBK, and Kolkata registered the most dominant win in this fixture.

Anwar Ali opened the scoring for the Blues, as captain Sunil Chhetri doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Manvir Singh and Ishan Pandita also joined the goal gallop.

In their most recent meeting, India faced Hong Kong on June 10, 2025, away from home. Coming into the game with confidence after a commanding win in their previous encounter, the Blue Tigers were hopeful of another strong performance.

However, fate had other plans, as India suffered a heartbreaking defeat following a last-minute penalty, leaving fans stunned.

India controlled large parts of the match, with the midfield looking sharp and composed. Despite their dominance, they struggled to convert their chances.

Deep into stoppage time, Hong Kong were awarded a penalty, which Stefan Pereira calmly converted to seal a dramatic victory for the hosts.
