India U-17 are playing Australia and Uzbekistan.

After missing out on the last edition of the tournament, the young Blue Colts are back in Asia’s premier youth competition as they prepare to take on Australia U-17 in their opening game of the AFC U-17 Men’s Asian Cup 2026. The match is scheduled to kick off at 21:30 IST at the King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia on May 6th, 2026.

There are huge expectations surrounding this side for three major reasons. First, this is the only Indian men’s team across all age categories to have qualified for the AFC Asian Cup this time around.

Second, the team is being led by Bibiano Fernandes, one of the finest coaches in the Indian football circuit when it comes to youth development.

Third, this is a great chance for India to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup as recently North Korea pulled out of the tournament making the group, a group of three teams. And a win against Australia tomorrow would put India firmly in control of their FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification hopes.

Three points would mean that India would only need a draw against Uzbekistan in the final game to seal qualification, while another win would guarantee it for sure.

Even if India lose to Uzbekistan after getting a win tomorrow, qualification could still happen if Australia fail to beat Uzbekistan. And even if all three teams end on same three points, it will depend on either the GD or H2H. So, to simply put it, a victory tomorrow would put India’s one foot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

That makes this an interesting game where India could still hope to take something positive, probably a win and take control of things.

The Stakes

India U-17

On November 30, 2025, the Indian U-17 boys made Indian football fans proud when they defeated Iran 2-1 in Ahmedabad to qualify for the final tournament as group winners. Since then, the AIFF has done a commendable job of arranging a good number of friendlies, giving Bibiano Fernandes valuable time to experiment with a set of players and further implement his style of play.

Since the end of January, the Indian U-17 side have played 14 friendlies across different countries to get used to facing strong opposition and prepare themselves in the best possible way ahead of the main tournament. Among the standout results from that run were victories over last year’s quarter-finalists Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. Their recent set of friendlies against Qatar ended in 0-0 and 1-1 draws.

With North Korea having withdrawn from the tournament, India will need to secure strong results from both the games if they are to progress to the knockout stage and qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Bibiano Fernandes will be well aware of the threat Australia possess, but he will also draw inspiration from his side’s closely fought 2-1 defeat against last year’s semi-finalists South Korea as proof that they can take something positive from this contest.

Australia U-17

Australia, meanwhile, come into the tournament on the back of a dominant display in the 2026 ASEAN U-17 Boys Championship, where Carl Veart’s side finished third among the 12 teams that took part. Prior to the ASEAN U-17 Championship, they also played a series of friendlies as part of the PacificAus Sports football tour and won all the matches.

In the ASEAN Championship, Australia won four of the five games they played, with their only defeat coming against eventual winners Vietnam in the semi-finals. Across those five matches, they scored an impressive 24 goals while conceding only two.

Carl Veart’s main objective will be to improve on Australia’s performance in the last edition of the tournament, where they were knocked out in the group stage where they lost to UAE.

India will appear to be an ideal opening fixture for the young Socceroos’ given their higher ranking and their superiority over India across all age groups in both men’s and women’s football.

Team News

Ahead of the opening game of the tournament, there are no major injury concerns for either side, with both head coaches expected to have fully fit squads available for selection.

Head-to-Head Record

These two teams have never previously faced each other at the U-17 level, making this their first-ever meeting in a competitive tournament.

Players to Watchout

India U-17 – Gunleiba

For India, there is one attacking player that Blue Colts fans will be especially excited to watch – Gunleiba, the man with a golden scoring boot who has consistently delivered whenever the team have needed a goal.

Ever since scoring the winner against Iran that sealed India’s place in the AFC Asian Cup, the dynamic winger has been in outstanding form, scoring seven goals in the 14 matches the team have played since then. His goals have come against quality opposition, including Turkey, Spartak Moscow, Indonesia, and South Korea.

Bibiano Fernandes will be keen to exploit the spaces left behind by the Australian defence and will hope to make full use of Gunleiba’s pace and directness in the counter-attacking moments that India are likely to get.

Australia U-17 – Georgio Hassarati

For the Indian defenders, Georgio Hassarati will be the biggest threat in the Australian attack. The Western Sydney Wanderers youngster has been in prolific scoring form for the young Socceroos over the past six months.

He scored a poker against Philippines in the qualifiers. In the recently concluded ASEAN U-17 Boys Championship, the striker finished as the golden boot winner with a record 11 goals in 5 games, six more than the player who finished second. He also found the net during the PacificAus Sports football tour.
