DPR Korea withdraw from AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026, boosting India’s FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification hopes

India are drawn in the Group D of AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026
In a recent development, DPR Korea have withdrawn at the last minute from the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026. They were drawn alongside India, Uzbekistan and Australia in Group D of the continental competition.
The reason for this last-minute withdrawal is not clearly known, but this last-minute change could prove to be very significant for the Indian team, with no replacement for the DPR Korea side in this group.
Let us take a look at how this decision can be crucial for India’s World Cup dream and how it could impact Group D of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026.
A major boost for India’s World Cup dream

From this edition of AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 the top two teams from each group will get a direct spot for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. This was a little tough for India earlier with the presence of DPR Korea and being drawn in such a tough group.
However, since the Group D now becomes a group of 3 with the exit of DPR Korea, India will now hope to somehow finish in the top two from a pool of just 3 teams and get a ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
As a result of this exit, India will have two fixtures only against Australia and Uzbekistan. While as much as this situation is helpful for India, Uzbekistan will also be keeping their eye on it as it is also of significant importance for them to play the World Cup.
Now, let us look at few scenarios that can help India finish top two in the table and get the ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
A two-point situation

Now, India will face two tough opponents in the form of Australia and Uzbekistan, keeping in mind that if India does not get any wins in this tournament, which is most certainly a possibility, they will need to get two draws anyhow against Australia and Uzbekistan, grabbing 2 points.
However, this does not mean that it becomes easy. India would depend on the result of the match between Australia and Uzbekistan and would want a certain win for either of the teams, which would put Australia or Uzbekistan at the top of group D with 4 points, making India the second-best team in the group and qualifying for the World Cup.
A three-point situation

Another situation that can be helpful for India is that if they get a certain win against either Australia or Uzbekistan, which will be tough but not impossible.
Keeping in mind that if India defeats either Uzbekistan or Australia, that would put India on 3 points and get them the World Cup spot. But if every team gets a win and is on equal points, India will have to rely on head-to-head and GD.
A four-or-more-points situation

If India win one match and either draw or win the second match as well, that would put them on 4 or 6 points.
With at least 4 points in the bag, India will surely qualify and make it to the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and this would most certainly be the best way India gets to the World Cup stage.
A one-point situation

If India draw one match and lose the other match, supposedly getting just a point out of 2 matches. In this situation, India will have to depend on the result of the other match between Australia and Uzbekistan and hope that the team that defeated India win, putting 2 teams in the group with 1 point.
So, if two teams end up with 1 point each, India will need to make sure that they lose the game with the smallest goal margin compared to the other losing team and score in the draw. This would help India get the spot for the World Cup either on GD or head-to-head.
Who are the opponents of India in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026?
After the exit of DPR Korea, India will now play only two matches: India vs Australia (6 May) and India vs Uzbekistan (10 May).
