The India U-17 Women’s team, led by Pamela Conti, are making their debut in the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 for the first time on merit, and they have already created history.

The young Blue Tigresses booked their place in the knockout stage with a commanding 4-0 win over Lebanon, becoming the first Indian team in almost 22 years to reach the knockout rounds of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup across all age categories, something neither the senior side nor the U-20 team had previously managed.

The challenge now becomes significantly tougher as India prepare to face hosts and Group A winners China in the quarterfinals.

China reached the semi-finals in the previous edition and eventually finished fourth. The match is scheduled to take place on May 11th at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium in China with the kick-off scheduled at 17:00 PM IST.

The Stakes

Even in defeats to Australia and Japan, there had been optimism around India’s chances of reaching the knockouts. Much of that belief came from the defensive discipline that the young Blue Tigresses displayed, keeping the margin of defeat relatively narrow on contrary to what had happened at senior/U-20 level. That ultimately proved crucial, with India progressing as one of the two best third-placed teams.

In the final group-stage game against Lebanon, Pamela Conti’s side dominated possession, created the better chances, and looked the superior team throughout before sealing a 4-0 win. One particularly encouraging sign was the contribution of the forwards in the final third, something India had lacked against Australia and Japan.

That victory must certainly has given the squad confidence heading into the quarter-final, but the quality China possess cannot be taken for granted. They are expected to pose a tough challenge similar to what Japan did, with the technical quality and home advantage.

At the same time, Pamela Conti and her players know exactly what is at stake. A victory would not only send them into the semi-finals but also secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. That opportunity alone should ensure India leave everything on the pitch.

China U-17

The Steel Roses, under the guidance of Xiaoxu Ma, have been among the standout sides of the tournament so far. In their three group-stage matches, they won all three, scored 15 goals, and conceded none, finishing top of their group ahead of Vietnam and Thailand.

Although qualification had effectively been secured after the second group-stage game, China showed no signs of taking things lightly. In their final group fixture, they dismantled Thailand 6-0, their second 6-0 win in three matches.

As hosts and one of the tournament favorites, China will naturally go into the game as clear favorites on paper. However, they will have to be wary of the defensive resilience India have shown so far. The Blue Tigresses have conceded only five goals despite facing quality opponents like Australia and Japan.

With home advantage in their favour, China’s immediate target will be to reach the semi-finals and then push for the title, something they missed out on in the previous edition.

Team News

There are no major injury concerns reported in either camp, with both head coaches expected to have fully fit squads available for selection.

Head-to-Head Record

The only previous meeting between these two teams came in the 2018 BRICS U-17 Football Cup in South Africa. In the final group-stage game, China defeated India 2-1 to finish second behind Brazil. Manisha Kalyan scored India’s only goal that day.
