With a win in the opener against Syria, the Blue Colts have increased their chances of progression
The qualification stage of the AFC U-20 Men’s Asian Cup began on the 31st of August, with the Blue colts registering an impressive 1-0 victory over Syria, courtesy of a goal from Shami Singamayum.
With matches yet to be played against Bangladesh and Uzbekistan, India can hope to feature in the main tournament in China in March 2027.
Let us take a look at how the Young Tigers can match the required criteria for qualification for the AFC U-20 Men’s Asian Cup 2027.

The Blue Colts have been drawn with Uzbekistan, a co-host of the FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup, Syria, and Bangladesh. The Tigers, winners of the 1974 edition, have not managed to secure qualification to the tournament since 2006.
Syria were the dominant side in the opener, even as India held fort in defence, remaining resolute. After Ahmad Khalaf of Syria was first judged offside and then hit the crossbar, India capitalised on a rare opportunity in the 86th minute.
Md Arbash’s cutback into the box saw Shami Singamayum poised to slot it home as Syria’s misses proved costly for the side.
Here’s how Mahesh Gawali’s squad can qualify for the tournament

32 teams have been divided into 8 groups of 4 teams each. The top team from each group as well as 7 out of the 8 runners up will make it directly to the finals in China with the host nation.
Thus, India has to either finish first or second in the group. With matches yet to go against Uzbekistan, and neighbours Bangladesh, one win should secure their progression to the tournament. While the Uzbekistan test will be difficult for the young colts, they should try to defeat Bangladesh, an easier task.
Bangladesh are the only team in the group whose senior team is ranked below India, giving Mahesh Gawli’s side no room for excuses when they take on the Bangla Tigers on 6th September. Prior to that however, they will have to face the Uzbeks on the 3rd of September.
A win and a draw, or a win and a loss, should be enough to see them through to China. India cannot, under any circumstances, risk a loss against their neighbours, which will deeply complicate their chances, as picking up any point against Uzbekistan can be unlikely.
In an ideal scenario of India defeating Bangladesh and Uzbekistan winning all matches, this is what the minitable will look like.
There is of course the chance of being the unlucky worst 2nd placed team which will not make it to the tournament.
However, with 8 groups, there can be teams that are placed 2nd with 5 or even 4 points. All in all, one more win, possibly against Bangladesh, will secure a spot in the U-20 Men’s Asia Cup for the Indian colts.
