Afghanistan crowned champions of 2024 U17 CAFA; beat Uzbekistan in final

Tajikistan were the champions of last year’s U17 CAFA.

Afghanistan U-17 football team claimed the 2024 CAFA Championship title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uzbekistan U-17 team in the final match on Saturday.

The victory is a bright spot for Afghanistan amid challenging circumstances as the football federation is currently under Taliban control, they demonstrated the resilience and talent of its young Afghan athletes on the regional stage. The young Afghans showed a lot of determination and bravery on the pitch as they won their first-ever U-17 CAFA Championship.

CAFA U-17 Championship

The 2024 U-17 CAFA Championship was the second edition, the international youth football championship organised by the Central Asia Football Association for the men’s U-17 national teams of Central Asia. The tournament was held from August 17th to 24th in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. All six CAFA members participated in the tournament. Host Tajikistan were the reigning champions having won the title in last year’s inaugural edition.

Afghanistan’s performance

The young Afghan team secured the championship with three wins and three clean sheets throughout the tournament, showcasing their strong defensive capabilities. They advanced to the final by defeating Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan by 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. The narrow 1-0 victory against a very strong Uzbek team secured them the title, marking a significant achievement for the team in the CAFA U-17.
