India denied Asian Games 2026 spot despite qualifying
A big opportunity missed for Indian football
With things already not looking very good for Indian football, both the men’s and women’s football team have been withdrawn from participation in Asian Games 2026. The situation for the Indian men’s football team was rather tricky as they somehow managed to make it to the 16 teams due to their performance at the U-23 level, where they finished second behind Qatar in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers.
However, for the women’s team, it was pretty simple and easy as they directly earned a spot in a reduced 12-team competition.
The Indian women’s football team missed out on participating in the upcoming Asian Games 2026 despite qualifying even after making it to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Australia.
However, now, the opportunity from both the Blue Tigers & the Blue Tigresses have been snatched away, as according to the Indian government’s policy, only teams which are ranked among the top eight in Asia will be given the opportunity to represent India at the Asian Games 2026.
A cruel blow to the Indian women’s football team
The decision comes as a very harsh blow for the Indian women’s football team, who managed to directly get a spot in the Asian Games 2026.
The women’s team, currently ranked 69th in the FIFA World Rankings and 13th in Asia have done very well in the past couple of games. Despite not getting good results at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, the Blue Tigresses managed to win Bronze at the FIFA Women’s Series in Kenya and went on to lift the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 as well.
So, this does seem like a very harsh decision, especially on the women’s team, who rightfully earned their spot in the Asian Games and have been doing well throughout.
Along with India, Australia and Iran have been left out as Hong Kong, Myanmar and Thailand replace them.
A miss for the Indian men’s football team
The men’s team were also denied the opportunity to play at the Asian Games 2026. The case for the men’s team is, however, different from the women’s team.
The men’s team currently hold the 138th spot in the FIFA World Rankings and a poor 26th spot in Asia. So, there were already doubts regarding their participation. However, the performance of the U-23 men’s team in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, where they finished behind Qatar, was the reason for them making it to the 16-team tournament.
But not being ranked in the top 8 came as a blow for India, as they were not given the chance to participate in the Asian Games 2026.
Recently in a joint press conference, AIFF Deputy Secretary General Mr. Satyanarayan shared the update on why the teams aren’t playing and how ISL can help the men’s team to further improve.
“There are some rules of the government based on which they depute teams for the Asian Games. We have 40 national federations, not all of them send teams. In football, we are not among the top eight in Asia. If we were in the top eight, we would have been at the (FIFA) World Cup.”
“There is a need to strengthen the league. The stronger the ISL, the stronger our national team will be. We have a nice crop of young players who have done well in continental championships. Hopefully, in the next five to seven years, we should see better performances from the national team.” he added.
However, now only time will tell if Indian Super League (ISL) actually helps Indian football improve and get better moving forward.
Why was Indian football team denied a spot in Asian Games 2026?
Because according to the Indian government’s policy, only teams which are ranked among the top eight in Asia will be given the opportunity to represent India at the Asian Games 2026. And both the men’s and women’s team are not in the top 8.
How many teams are participating in the Asian Games football?
The men’s competition will feature 16 teams whereas the women’s will feature 12 teams.
