Australia hit with surprise sanction before AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup start against India

Ineligible player rule break cancels Australia’s 22-0 win in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers
The Australia U17 women’s football team will be kicking off their AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup campaign against India U17 on Saturday (May 2, 2026). The Junior Matildas are definitely going to push to win the tournament for the first time, but they’ve been struck with a shocking embarrassment ahead of the start of the competition.
Only days before the start of their AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup campaign, the AFC have confirmed that the Australia U17 women’s side broke some rules in one of their qualification matches for the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup. The Australia U17 women’s side took part in two qualification matches for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup, where they faced Singapore U17 women as well as the Northern Mariana Islanders U17 women’s side.

The Junior Matildas won both matches in compelling fashion to qualify for the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup. However, after an investigation from within AFC, it’s been found that they actually broke some rules in their match against the Northern Mariana Islanders U17 side in one of their qualification matches, which took place on 13 October (2025).
The Australia U17 women’s side picked up a huge 22-0 win in that game, but that result has now been overturned by the AFC. That is because the Asian confederation has confirmed that they found Australia to have fielded an ineligible player, which is deemed to be an offence under the Article 56 of the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Code.
As a result of this finding, the match has now automatically deemed to have been forfeited by Football Australia and a 3-0 win been handed to the Northern Mariana Islanders U17 team. Moreover, Football Australia will also have to pay a fine of $1,000 within the next 30 days as a result of their offence.
Will breaking AFC rules harm Australia’s participation in the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup?

The question that many fans pondered about after this revelation from the AFC is whether Australia’s qualification for the U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 might be put into jeopardy by them having forfeited one of their qualification games. However, the Young Matildas do not have to worry on that front.
With Northern Mariana Islanders’ U17 being given a win, that means the final table for the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers group E (which contained Australia) have all three teams finish the qualification with three points. However, as Australia U17 also defeated Singapore U17 women by an 11-0 margin, they have been able to top their group irrespective of the points deduction – as they boasted a +8 goal difference – the highest among all three teams in the qualification group.
That means that the Young Matildas will still be able to participate in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup, where they aim to navigate through tricky oppositions to win the tournament for the first time ever. The highest finish for Australia U17 in such a competition has been fourth place, which happened in the 2019 and 2009 editions (both held in Thailand).
The Young Matildas will be kicking off their AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 campaign against India on 2 May. However, they also have tricky matches against Japan U17 and Lebanon U17 to go through in the group stages as well, with the top-2 teams at the end of the round directly qualifying for the knockout rounds and two of the three best-ranked third-place teams also moving into the quarterfinals.
Australia U17 head into the competition at the back of a two-match winless run. However, they did win the ASEAN U-17 Women’s Championship in 2025 and will hope to bring out their best form to go all the way into winning the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
