The Argentine side put in a brave shift for their first win of the tournament.
Defensa y Justicia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Churchill Brothers FC in the 2nd Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy. It was all thanks to a solitary goal from Vergara Cruz in the 35th minute. The game was closely contested at the PJN Stadium on Wednesday.
The match’s decisive moment arrived when Cruz, who has been in fine form throughout the tournament, scored his second goal on Goan soil. The goal came from a well-executed move initiated by Machado Imanol, who delivered a precise chip into the box. Cruz expertly controlled the ball with his chest, evaded the Churchill defence, and calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper. His goal helped secure all three points for the Argentine side in Group B.
I-League side Churchill Brothers started the game brightly. They had an early chance to take the lead. In the 7th minute, Trijoy Dias whipped in a low cross into the box. But the ball rolled across the face of the goal with no Churchill player in the vicinity to finish the move. The Goan side would soon regret the missed opportunity as Defensa y Justicia began to impose themselves on the game.
In the 14th minute, Defensa had their first real chance of the match. Ivancic Franco delivered a pinpoint cross from the left flank, finding Vergara Cruz unmarked in the box. Cruz’s header was powerful and on target. However, the Churchill Brothers’ goalkeeper was equal to the task, making a fine save to keep the score level.
Defensa’s persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Cruz’s clinical finish broke the deadlock. As the first half neared its conclusion, Defensa almost doubled their lead. Quiroga delivered a low cross into the box. After a chaotic scramble, Bustos Gabriel managed to poke the ball into the net. But the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the buildup.
Despite being a goal down, Churchill Brothers showed resilience and pushed for an equalizer. They nearly found it in the 42nd minute when Stendly Fernandes unleashed a low shot from the edge of the box. It was deflected just wide by the Defensa goalkeeper, resulting in a corner. Alent Colaco also tried his luck from distance, but his shot went over the bar.
The second half saw Churchill Brothers intensify their search for an equalizer. They had another golden opportunity in the 55th minute. Valdez Franco sent a precise through ball to Quiroga Agustan, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, Churchill’s Suraj Mallick produced a crucial save to keep his side in the game.
Churchill Brothers continued to press forward, but Defensa y Justicia’s defence remained resolute. Despite the Goan side’s best efforts, they were unable to breach the solid Defensa backline. The match ended 1-0 in favour of the Argentine outfit.
