India's Brazil clash & FIFA ASEAN Cup dilemma: Who should play where?

India will play Brazil in an international friendly in Kolkata on 3 October 2026

While Indian football was doing well a couple of years ago, particularly in the summer of 2023, there was little push or ambition from the AIFF to set up more competitive friendlies against top-tier nations. However, with India now struggling around the 135-140 range in the FIFA World Rankings, suddenly several top teams from around the world are ready to play against the Blue Tigers.

India played higher-ranked Jamaica and Zimbabwe in May at the Unity Cup 2026, followed by two friendlies against the higher-ranked and technically superior Tajikistan in June, winning none of the four games.

Now, they are set to face higher-ranked Indonesia and Malaysia in the FIFA ASEAN Cup alongside Singapore, while a humongous clash against world No. 5 Brazil awaits them in Kolkata, followed by a set of friendlies against New Zealand.

India vs Brazil & FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026: Which squad should Blue Tigers field?

While it is certainly a positive to test themselves against tougher and higher-ranked opposition, the scheduling of the FIFA ASEAN Cup and the Brazil friendly remains a major area of concern for the Blue Tigers. If India makes it past the group stage of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, they are likely to play their semi-final at around the same time as the Brazil friendly.

This is where India has a decision to make. Will they send the U-23 team to the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia and field the senior team against Brazil? Or will they do the opposite? Or will they opt for a mix of young and senior players across both squads?

Let’s look at each scenario and assess what might be the best option for the Indian team.

Why should India field their U-23 side for the Brazil clash?

Brazil, ranked fifth in the world and five-time World Cup champions, are surely going to be a huge uphill task for the Blue Tigers, irrespective of whether the senior or U-23 side takes the field. While Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that he could try a few new faces in the friendly against India, even those new stars are likely to be heads and shoulders above the quality of the Indian players.

So, while a defeat is expected in almost every scenario for the Blue Tigers, why not play the U-23 side and take the chance of losing, or potentially even securing a draw, rather than fielding the same set of senior players who have failed on numerous occasions, even against AFC opposition in the past?

When the Indian women’s team played Brazil in 2021, 16-year-old Shilky Devi, 20-year-old Manisha Kalyan, 22-year-old Sweety Devi and 24-year-old Pyari Xaxa were all part of the squad and featured in the game. For these youngsters, it was not just a match to cherish for a lifetime. Manisha earned a career abroad following her brilliant strike, while the likes of Sweety, Shilky and Pyari gained valuable experience and went on to become the backbone of whatever success the Blue Tigresses have achieved since then.

Likewise, this match could be a potentially life-changing opportunity for the Indian U-23 players. Just one good performance could be enough to catch the attention of thousands of scouts who will be tuning into the game. It could open up opportunities for these players in leagues outside India and potentially pave the way for many more Indian youngsters in the future.

Moreover, from whatever football the Indian U-23 side under Naushad Moosa has displayed over the last two years, they have shown two things for sure; they are technically better than the senior team and they are fearless. They want to play with the ball at their feet rather than hide behind it. This would therefore be a better challenge for both the players and the coach, as they look to continue playing this way against a Brazil side that is going to cause them plenty of problems.

On the other hand, what India need right now is to win a few games, climb up the FIFA rankings and ensure they do not end up playing in the first round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. To achieve that, the senior team must travel to the FIFA ASEAN Cup, look to win against the likes of Singapore and Malaysia, make it to the knockouts, potentially grind out another victory and make a significant leap in the FIFA world rankings.

Will the senior players win if they play against Brazil? Practically, no. Can they win against teams in the FIFA ASEAN Cup? Absolutely.

Therefore, it makes more sense for Khalid Jamil and his boys to travel to Indonesia, work on their tactical plans, address the goalscoring woes, fix the structural issues and build confidence by playing against teams ranked around them, rather than spending 90 minutes defending and making little progress from a one-off exhibition game against Brazil.

Can it work the other way?

Should India field the senior team for the Brazil clash and the U-23 side for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026!?

Ayushman Sharma explains!

A fixture against five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil is not just another international friendly; it’s an opportunity for Indian football to test itself against one of football’s greatest nations. Many may argue that the U-23 side should be given the opportunity to play Brazil for international exposure; however, there is an equally important case for Khalid Jamil’s senior team as well.

India are currently at a very critical point under Khalid Jamil and are entering an important phase. A match against Brazil provides a golden opportunity to assess how his first-choice players play against world-class opponents, especially before the important FIFA and AFC qualifiers next year. It’s less about the result and more about how Khalid Jamil fields an XI that’s able to maintain defensive structure and have a strong mentality under strong opponents after the recent few months under him.

Many players from the current batch of the senior team have never played against a nation like Brazil. Competing against elite players can be very helpful for the senior team. However, let’s clear one thing: the senior team doesn’t mean that the youngsters cannot play the Brazil friendly.

We have seen in the last couple of senior team games that players like Sanan, Pramveer, Shabong, Barla and many more were given important call-ups, and perhaps this match against Brazil can act as a way of introducing a few more young talented Indian players to the senior team under Khalid Jamil.

A major reason to field the U-23 side in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is that, unlike the Brazil game, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will offer multiple games against quality opponents of a similar or a little better level. These 4-5 match experiences for the U-23 squad can be way better than one glamour friendly against Brazil.

We have already seen how well our U-23 side have done in recent times, and giving them more games, especially after they failed to qualify for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, is very important. The sustained international exposure can be far more beneficial for player development rather than a glamour concert game against Brazil.

Several U-23 players are growing positively under Naushad Moosa, and some have even earned a call-up for the India senior team already, and many more are expected to become a part of the team for the next World Cup qualifiers.

Allowing them to play a tournament like the FIFA ASEAN Cup gives them an important responsibility to handle pressure at a competitive level against other senior teams.

It’s better if Khalid Jamil’s senior team plays the high-profile friendly against Brazil, for which the AIFF is reportedly set to spend around ₹60-70 crore.

However, the AIFF should also arrange another international friendly before the Brazil game. Most of the senior players will be coming straight out of pre-season, and they need match practice before facing one of the world’s best teams.

More importantly, it feels like this is being treated as a one-off event. Neither the AIFF appears to be looking at the long-term development of the national team, and Khalid Jamil’s approach has largely been to focus on one game at a time.

Meanwhile, Naushad Moosa’s India U-23 side would be better suited to compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup. It would allow him to take the country’s best U-23 players, along with a few senior players who miss out on Khalid Jamil’s squad, and give them at least three quality international matches.

That experience would be valuable for their development, especially given the likelihood that the India U-23 team will compete in the SAFF Championship during the November international window.

While the FIFA World Ranking points will absolutely matter and can be very crucial, India’s long-term target should be to give the youngsters more game time rather than one glamour friendly; this can help Indian football to discover future senior team players, and even if the result isn’t very good, the experience gained during a multiple-nation FIFA tournament surely outweighs short-term glamour friendlies.

What must India not do at all costs?

Brazil friendly and FIFA ASEAN Cup face a scheduling conflict

One thing India must avoid at all costs is creating a pool of 45-50 players comprising both senior and U-23 players and then dividing them into two groups, ensuring a mix of youth and experience in each group. Most importantly, making Mahesh Gawali the head coach of one of the groups would be a disaster on all fronts and could only make things worse for the Blue Tigers.

Irrespective of which team plays which clash, the AIFF must ensure that Naushad Moosa and his U-23 side form one group, while Khalid Jamil and his senior team form the other. Both coaches should be allowed to continue building on whatever they have developed over the last 12-18 months.

Mixing players between the two groups would serve little purpose for the long-term future of Indian football.
