Mohun Bagan Super Giant will aim to clinch the 2024 Calcutta Football League (CFL) title after having last won the championship back in 2018. The Mariners will have their reserves and academy-level players compete for them for this coveted league title and have been told of their initial fixtures for the 2024 CFL campaign.
In the 2024 Calcutta Football League, Mohun Bagan have been placed in Group B. As part of the format for the upcoming campaign, 13 teams of two groups will be created. Each team will play 12 games in a (home/away) format and the top three teams will move on to the Super Six championship round. But before the championship round, the Mariners will have to focus on succeeding in the group league phase itself.
They have been placed in a tricky group which also contains arch-rivals East Bengal. Alongside that, there are also other formidable opponents like Bhawanipore FC, Peerless SC and Tollygunge Agragami FC. Mohun Bagan need to win the majority of their group games to dominate their way to the championship round.
The Mariners will kick off their 2024 Calcutta Football League campaign in an away game against Bhawanipore on 2 July 2024. That is going to be followed by another match on the road against ASOS Rainbow FC in the third round of the league campaign.
Mohun Bagan’s third match will be the blockbuster one against rivals East Bengal on 13 July in what will be the first Kolkata derby of the 2024-25 season. While the Mariners will be the hosts for this, the ground or time details are yet to be confirmed.
This will be followed by another challenging home game against Peerless SC at the Naihati Stadium on 18 July. Mohun Bagan will then go on to face the Calcutta Police FC on 23 July in the sixth round of the league phase. So far, only these fixtures involving have been confirmed by the league organizers. More games are going to be announced in due course.
The Mariners are already preparing strongly for the upcoming CFL title. The team will be coached by Deggie Cardozo and feature some of Mohun Bagan’s best young talents. They will look to comply with the CFL’s new rules that any team will need to field four ‘home-state’ players in their starting XI in every game. This is done to encourage the growth of more Bengal-based footballers in the CFL and give them opportunities to shine.
Mohun Bagan’s CFL squad is likely to feature some of their stars who featured in the Indian Super League (ISL) success last season. Tenacious midfielder Abhishek Suryavanshi could be in the squad. The likes of Dippendu Biswas, Sumit Rathi, Amandeep Singh and Suhail Bhat – who all played for the senior team last season – should also strengthen the squad. The squad will, however, not have any foreign players.
The Mariners have a strong enough squad to go all the way in the Calcutta Football League this season. Several youngsters will look to produce impressive performances to catch new coach Jose Molina’s attention and increase their chances of making it to the ISL squad.
