The living legend Sunil Chhetri gave the Blue Tigers a lead with a goal on his 150th appearance.
Sunil Chhetri scored his 94th goal in his 150th appearance for the Indian men’s football team against Afghanistan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (second round) fixture on 26 March 2024 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam. The venue is a special one for the captain, leader, and legend as four of his 10 goals in the FIFA World Cup Qualifications have come here.
Just when it looked like India and Afghanistan were heading towards another half of football without a goal, a handball by Haroon Amiri gave Igor Stimac’s men a wonderful chance to score. Only one man from the Indian lineup is tailor-made for pressure situations like these. The skipper, Sunil Chhetri, stepped up to the mark and converted the spot kick expertly in the bottom left corner to give a lead to the Blue Tigers heading into the second half.
Looking at the past goals in Guwahati
Sunil Chhetri enjoys passionate support wherever India plays. However, he has shown a brilliant run of form, particularly in Guwahati in India’s FIFA World Cup Qualifiers campaigns in the past and present.
Sunil Chhetri scored a sensational brace against Nepal back in 2015. Both of his goals ensured a 2-0 win for India, helping the country in its qualifying campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Then, he followed up with a goal against Oman in 2019, during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Lastly, his latest and fourth goal for the Indian national team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers came against Afghanistan in 2024.
There have been talks of Sunil Chhetri nearing his retirement from international football. However, one must admire the composure and reliability of the greatest Indian footballer ever in pressure situations. There may never be a figure who excels with flying colors when the country needs them the most.
