Who is Divij Surapaneni? Indian youngster making his mark in Croatia

With more promising Indian footballers looking to make an ambitious switch outside of the country to enhance their football career, one such player is former Bengaluru FC youngster Divij Surapaneni. The 19-year-old defender earned the attention of scouts with his performance with the Blues’ reserve team in the 2024-25 season, as well as impressing the Karnataka state team as well.

Surapaneni impressed with his performances for the Bengaluru FC reserves a few years ago, working hard on the pitch to neutralize the threat of dangerous forwards.

The 19-year-old centre-back has the experience of working under the guidance of India U-17 head coach Bibiano Fernandes, and in 2025 he decided to take a big leap forward in his career by leaving Indian football to pursue a career in Europe.

The defender was able to sign a professional contract with Slovenian club NK Brinje, getting to learn a whole new experience of playing under tougher challenges and circumstances in the European league.

Surapaneni was able to spend a year with the Slovenian club, before opting for another ambitious change in February 2026 – where he joined Croatian side NK Podravina Ludbreg.

The young defender helped his side reach the finals of the Kup Varazdin and also qualify for the Croatian FA Cup, the biggest domestic cup competition in the country.

He has been playing for Croatian third-division (north) side NK Suhopolje since August (2026) and aiming to get a stronger foothold for himself in the Croatian football stage.

What kind of player is Divij Surapaneni?

Having come up through the Bengaluru FC school football programme, Divij joined the Blues at the age of 15 and started moving upwards in the Indian youth football stage with the Indian Super League (ISL) side. The 19-year-old has proven himself as a really versatile defender, which has enabled him to climb the ladder to establish a career for himself playing football in Europe.

The teenager is primary a centre-back, but is adaptable enough to play in a variety of other positions. He can also play as a defensive midfielder if needed or in either of the two full-backs position, making himself a valuable squad player for any coach. This versatility mostly pertains to his ability to win key duels and being quick enough to keep up with the speed of tricky attacking players.

Divij has also proven himself to be a composed defender when it comes to holding his own in high-pressure scenarios, as he’s able to read the movement of opposition attacking players well to neutralize their threat and stop them from threatening his goal.

His composure also enables him to move the ball forward rather well in the build-up play, making him quite reliable for more progressive sides.

The 19-year-old defender is also gifted with a solid positional awareness when defending against adversity, being able to read the rhythm and build-up play of his opposition players in a smart manner. He can thus position himself into the right areas to be able to make crucial clearances, fending off pressure from opponents and adding more assurances to his defensive structure.

Despite only being a teenager, Divij has earned the experience of captaining junior or reserve teams in the past. He has showcased impressive leadership qualities, being able to motivate the players around him by being a vocal figure and his crucial defensive contributions also enabling him to gain the trust of those around him.

It’s his reliable defensive attributes that have enabled him to move to Europe to play for multiple European sides and hold his own playing in the Croatian football stage for the last few months.

NK Suhopolje’s head coach Ivan Presečan also spoke highly of the young defender.

“Divij is a reliable stopper who plays calmly, safely and responsibly. He reads the game very well, interrupts the opponent’s attacks in a timely manner and is dominant in duels and jumps. He is the leader of the defense, always well placed and gives security to the whole team,” coach Ivan Presečan said to Khel Now.

What does Divij Surapaneni’s heroics mean for Indian football?

Divij Surapaneni was able to earn his high-profile move to playing in European football because of how well he performed in the youth level in India, earning him the attention of foreign scouts to give him a chance in Europe.

Even though it’s only been over a year since the young defender started playing in the European football, his longevity at that stage could be crucial for inspiring more up-and-coming young Indian footballers to take a similar jump forward.

Divij would, of course, get a very unique experience in learning about the traits of football while playing in Europe and also get to build himself up to be physically strong enough to come up against some formidable foreign strikers as well.

That can potentially enable him to catch the attention of the India head coach Khalid Jamil soon and potentially earn him a call-up to the Indian football team because of the ongoing overhaul of the defensive options for the Blue Tigers under the gaffer.

Surapaneni’s heroics in Europe could also mark a positive step for Indian football and indicate that the new generation of youngsters might be ready to start playing in the foreign football leagues more regularly and spread the identity of the Indian football scene beyond just their own country as well.

Of course, a lot will depend on how successful Divij can really be in Croatian football and if he can maintain longevity in playing in Europe to determine whether he’s really a success story for Indian football.

For the time being, however, the 19-year-old is making Indian football proud with his heroics in Europe to prove himself as a next big thing for Indian football.
