East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan: What happened last time in Durand Cup?

East Bengal to face Mohun Bagan in Durand Cup 2026 final.

The Kolkata Derby is set to make headlines as the Durand Cup 2026 final will see Mohun Bagan take on East Bengal for the title at the VYBK Stadium, Kolkata.

Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal FC have played each other multiple times in the Durand Cup history which includes multiple group stage games and finals as well.

But their recent outing was on 25th July 2026, when both the Kolkata giants played the first match of the 2026-27 season, also kicking off the 135th edition of Durand Cup. Both the teams looked rusty in the first match; however, Sahal Abdul Samad’s solo goal helped the Mariners register a win over the Torchbearers.

East Bengal FC have since then improved significantly as they have played consistent football for the last 27 days. Therefore, this time in the final it will not be an easy task for the Mariners.

In this article we take a look at what happened when East Bengal last played Mohun Bagan in Durand Cup.

Mohun Bagan SG secured first win of their Durand Cup 2026 campaign after defeating East Bengal FC in the high voltage Kolkata Derby which was played on 25th July.

Sahal Abdul Samad scored the solitary goal for the Mariners as the ISL 2025-26 champions fell short against their arch-rivals. Both the Kolkata giants fielded an all-Indian lineup in the Durand Cup 2026 opener when they last played.

In the first half of the game, Mohun Bagan SG were the better side and also had the upper hand over East Bengal, the best chance fell for Sahal Abdul Samad at the 18th minute, but the shot from Sahal was denied by Gill.

Both sides played their football in a very compact shape in the first half and stayed cautious as none of them wanted to concede first in a high-stake derby.

After a very entertaining first half at the VYBK Stadium, Kolkata, Sahal Abdul Samad sealed the victory for Mohun Bagan in the second half as he scored the only goal of the match in the 52nd minute of the play courtesy of a beautiful assist from Kiyan Nasiri. With Sahal’s goal, Mohun Bagan outclassed their arch-rivals East Bengal FC 1-0.
